Welcome from the EECS Undergraduate Officer

Dear Member of the Class of 2011:

Welcome to Course VI.

I am pleased that you have decided to join the Department of Electrical
Engineering and Computer Science. It is a distinguished department
with outstanding faculty and can provide you with a challenging and
stimulating environment in which to learn. It will be up to you to
make choices and direct your efforts in order to get the most from this
educational experience.

It is important that you get to know some of the faculty, research
staff, and administration as well as your fellow students as you
continue your education. This can be difficult in a large department
and we want to start the process of getting acquainted by helping you
select an academic advisor for the Fall.

The Class of 2011 is the first class entirely in our new EECS curriculum.
While you may choose to complete your education with the S.B. degree
after four years, we consider the Master of Engineering to be our first
professional degree and believe that the combined S.B. and M.Eng.
programs give you more flexibility and allow for both breadth and depth
in your studies. Whether you go on for the Ph.D. or go into industry
you can benefit from first obtaining the M.Eng. degree.

We admit the majority of our undergraduates to the M.Eng. program
without an elaborate application procedure. Qualified students who
fill out a one-page checklist will be admitted prior to the Fall Term
of their senior year.

Under our programs, you will normally stay with the same advisor until
the Master of Engineering degree is completed. If a situation should
arise in the future which makes a change in advisor appropriate, such
changes aren't difficult. Just go to Room 38-476.

If you have questions or problems or need information, now or in the
future, the Course VI Undergraduate Office (Room 38-476) is the place
to go. Anne Hunter is a great source of information and guidance, and
Vera Sayzew and Linda Sullivan provide able support.

Together we hope to help you have a successful career in EECS.

Sincerely,

Arthur C. Smith
Undergraduate Officer
