Hints for Selecting
a Course VI Undergraduate Advisor |
Are you a freshman intending to major in EECS? Welcome to the department.
Select your academic advisor here.
This procedure uses a secure Web server. You need an MIT personal certificate.
You probably already have one, but if not,
get your MIT
certificate here.
Your current status, as far as we can tell, is one of the following. If it is
unknown,
check it now.
If your certificate does not work, you will get some kind of error response.

Complete and submit your course selection form, declaring one of the three EECS majors (6-1, 6-2, or 6-3). No matter which you declare, you can change to another if your interests change. After a few days the EECS Undergraduate Office will learn of your decision, and send you confirmation by e-mail, inviting you to use this Web site to select your advisor. At that time, your status as shown above will change.
Even before getting this e-mail invitation, look at the list of Class of 2011 Advisors. Read about their approaches to advising, learn about their technical areas of interest, and review their personal home pages.
Note about this list . . .
The information in this list is presented to help you choose an advisor. Please feel free to discuss your choice with upperclass students and graduate students. However please do NOT contact or attempt to interview any of the advisors listed there. There are over 200 of you and only about 25 of them. Many of them have lots of current advisees they're trying to help graduate, and all of the usual end-of-term stress (yes, the faculty suffer from it as much as the students). The list indicates whether they are faculty or research staff, whether they have advised undergraduates before, and whether they are new to MIT, have been here a while, or virtually forever.
Bear in mind that you may change advisors later, so this decision is not as life-or-death as it may seem. Please select an advisor in the next couple of weeks, before you leave for the summer.
Anne Hunter, Course VI Administrator
If your status as shown above is as a freshman intending to major in EECS but without any advisor selected, you are ready for the Advisor Selection Program.
You will see a list of advisors. Note that each advisor has a maximum number of advisees. Only those with openings are listed. Advisees are assigned first-come first-served. If you delay too long, your first choice may not be available.
Check the box next to your chosen advisor's name, and submit the form. You will get confirmation by e-mail.
You are almost done but not quite. Your confirmation e-mail will have contact information about your advisor. You should get in touch and introduce yourself. If you forget the name of your advisor or lose the contact information, look here.
We hope you are pleased with this selection procedure. More to the point, we hope that you are pleased with your advisor, and find his or her guidance and advice to be useful during the next few years. If you wish to change advisor at any time, for any reason, contact the EECS Undergraduate Office (don't use this Web site).
If your status as shown above is not correct, please contact the EECS Undergraduate Office, Room 38-376, phone 617-253-7329, e-mail <ug (at) eecs.mit.edu>.
